Winter wonderland in February

So we were expecting a winter storm as predicted by the weatherpeople. Well, this morning, we woke up to find that it had snowed 8 inches! I was the first to wake up with Jake this morning. I took him to the window to look outside and he was amazed. His mouth popped open and he was squealing and making curious noises.

Later on, Joaquin woke up and didn't seem interested in the white blanket that covered our backyard. After breakfast, we bundled them up and took them outside. The boys seemed curious at first, but quickly lost interest. In an effort to preserve some memories, Javier brought out a sled from our shed and pulled the boys around on it. My mom sat on the swing with the boys. Javier let the boys touch the snow and even offered Joaquin a little taste. After about 15 minutes, they had enough of the snow and wanted to come in.

I forgot to mention that we were not wholly prepared for winter playtime. I had acquired a snowsuit for Joaquin to wear from a garage sale before the boys were born, but I never thought to buy another suit...since we haven't encountered much snow. So we put the snow suit on Joaquin as well as a big puffy coat. For Jacob
we just layered him up well. He always runs a bit warmer than Joaquin anyway. The problem was the shoes. Neither one of them had shoes appropriate for playing in the snow. The shoes they own are not waterproof and do not offer much insulation from the cold. ....So we improvised. Their homemade snow shoes were made up of a pair of socks, then shoes, then saran wrap to keep the wet out, and then duct tape to keep the saran wrap in place. If you enlarge any of the pics, you can plainly see the homemade creation. It's not the prettiest thing or the most fashionable, but it was functional. The boys' feet stayed dry and were warm when we took off their shoes.
We tried to put their mittens on, but they simply would not keep them on.

I think it was a fun, brief outing for everyone.

Needless to say, we will be spending most of our time in the house until this snow melts away. No big plans for this long weekend. I'm just glad that Javier will be home for longer than usual. He has Monday and Tuesday off. We're crossing our fingers for nice weather one of those days so we can take the boys out somewhere. They want to burn some energy outside this house.

There really isn't anything else to report. The boys are well. I'm thankful that they have not been sick a single day this winter so far. We have been very lucky in that department. I remember several months ago, they were both sick at the same time, and it was miserable. Everyone here is well.

Sled was left in the shed along with a few other items when we moved it!
